The little black box with the coloured cables attached is an on-board preamp - also known as the Aguilar OBP-3TK - to build into an electric bass guitar, giving you an active 3-band EQ that allows you to boost and filter bass, mids and trebles. You can filter or boost the bass by 18 dB at 40 Hz, the trebles by 16 dB at 6.5 Hz and the mids by 16 dB at 400 or 800 Hz - selectable via the included black mini switch. In addition to the switch, the Aguilar OBP-3TK comes with three high-quality potentiometers.
